ISLAMABAD, 9 March 2013 (The News): Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajid has nominated Prof. Waris Mir, former chairman of the Journalism Department of the Punjab University and a renowned Daily Jang writer, for the highest civil award of the country.
The decision to nominate him for the award was taken on the basis of his views about the 1971 military operation in East Pakistan. Before the start of military operation, Prof. Waris Mir along with the students’ delegation from the Punjab University had visited Dhaka University where he met the teachers and students to remove misunderstandings between the two sides, but of no avail.
After returning from Dhaka, Prof Waris wrote some columns but the then military government did not allow their publication. However, the Jung Publishers compiled those articles into a book in 1985 and published it.
After going through the book, the BD government decided to award their highest civil award to Prof. Waris Mir. The award will be conferred on him at Dhaka on March 26.Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari had also announced Hilal-e-Imtiaz for Prof. Waris Mir which was received by his son Hamid Mir on March 23, 2012.
