PM recommends Hilal-e-Imtiaz award for late Prof. Waris Mir

ISLAMABAD, 29 July, 2013 (APP): Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani has recommended to President Asif Ali Zardari to confer Pakistan’s highest civil award – Hilal-e-Imtiaz – on late Prof. Waris Mir (1938-1987), an eminent journalist, intellectual, writer and academician, who is accredited for his courageous struggle to uphold the cause of democracy against all odds.

The award has been recommended in recognition of Prof. Mir’s contribution in the field of journalism, his sacrifices and struggle for the restoration of democracy, for upholding the supremacy of the parliament, for strengthening democratic institutions and for defending the press freedom. Through his bold writings and speeches, late Prof. Waris Mir fought a combat alone in the dark days of Zia-ul-Haq martial law and set an example to follow which makes him an icon par excellence, who continues to live through his writings. Prof Waris Mir died at the young age of 48 in July 1987.
